In Focus Friday w/ My Mind's Lens: October 2013

Thank goodness my contributors are keeping with a fall theme this month, cause LAWD knows I am failing miserably.  Although we are experiencing some cooler temperatures around these parts, the last couple of days have been pretty darn close to 80 degrees and in my dictionary that DOES NOT = Fall....just sayin.  As October is winding to a close it is time for Kaeley's In Focus Friday.

Photobucket

Lucky for us, in Kaeley's part of the world they are actually experiencing Fall and she is sharing some of her favorite images from this wonderful season.

******************************

Last month I shared a list of the must-take photos for the fall.  At that point, fall was really just starting to set in.  Now, there are more leaves on the ground than what's left on the trees.  Fortunately, the rain has held off, but I'm sure it won't be long before it returns as well.  In the last couple of weeks, I have been taking advantage of the gorgeous weather we have been receiving in the Pacific NW and getting outside as much as possible.

I have had the opportunity to meet with several families for portrait sessions, as well as take some pictures just for myself.  So this month, I want to share some of my favorite pictures from the last month or so.

If you would like to see more about what fall is looking like over at My Mind's Lens, you can click here.

What are some of your favorite things about fall?

Thank you, Kaeley!  I have a busy weekend ahead....super early breakfast with a girlfriend in the morning, followed by a 100 mile drive to Wortham, TX to take pics for some guys at work that are doing the Dallas Tough Mudder (and to add to the insanity that is TM...they are calling for rain), soccer in the evening, followed by a Halloween party.  I think we will just collapse on Sunday..lol.  Have a great weekend and thanks for stopping by!

In Focus Friday w/ My Mind's Lens: September 2013

As promised, here is Kaeley's September installment of In Focus Friday.  Kaeley lives in Oregon, so Fall shows up a little earlier for her (*note NORMAL time), as opposed to Texas where yesterday he were still rockin' 95 degrees - will it ever end????  Anyway, Kaeley is sharing some photo prompts to get us in the mood for Fall....no matter where we live!

***************************************************

I don't know what the deal is this week - my mind must be elsewhere, but I'm not sure where!  I haven't been able to focus at work or get motivated to do the tasks at hand . . . I forget to send a fellow blogger some information I promised . . . and if it wasn't for Julie sending me a little reminder yesterday afternoon, I wouldn't even be here!  I thought that the sick bug that is making its way through our friends and family had escaped me, but I fear it may have just gotten sidetracked and has come back for me.  Maybe that is the problem . . .

At any rate, I am here!  If you are the type of person who likes to take pictures - either including your family, or just of your surroundings - of the various seasons, I want to share 10 photos that I think everybody should try to capture this Fall.

1. Colorful leaves on the ground.  For an extra challenge, capture a child jumping into a whole PILE of red and orange leaves.

2. A scary-looking house.  There has to be at least one of these in your neighborhood.  Here is the one near my house, I think the fence is what really does it for me.

3. Jack-O-Lanterns.  This one is a given.  For a change from the traditional "pumpkin face", try a new design - decorating your pumpkin in other ways, such as painting it like I did!

4. A cup of hot cider (or your favorite hot drink).  Nothing says "fall" more than the smell of hot apple cider.

5. Your favorite fall recipe.  I LOVE being able to start making soups and casseroles again once the cold weather starts to settle in.

6. Trick-or-treaters.  The baby outfits are always my favorite - what could be cuter than a baby-sized pumpkin or kitty or cow?

7. A farm.  This can be an actual farmhouse, a pumpkin patch, rows of crops.   But hay bales and fresh squash and gourds always make me think of fall.

8. A football game.  I remember when I was younger I used to love going to the homecoming football game . . . and when I was in high school enjoying all the events of homecoming week.  Ever heard this song?
The Boys of Fall by Kenny Chesney on Grooveshark

Yep - football season means fall is here!! So bundle up, and get out and support your local football teams.

9. Your Thanksgiving feast!  Last year I cooked my first turkey ever when we had all of our friends over for a Thanksgiving themed housewarming party - potluck style.  I was super nervous since it would be feeding so many people, but it actually went pretty smoothly.

10. Reflection in a rain puddle.  You don't have to live in the NW to find rain puddles already.  See how much detail you can capture in the reflection.

Thank you for stopping by for In Focus Friday, and have a great weekend!

*****************************************************

Kaeley, thank you so much for the great photo ideas for capturing fall.  I think that reflection picture is amazing!  I hope that you all will stop back next week where I will finish up the last two days of my Orlando vacation from a couple of weeks ago.  If you would like to get caught up. you can find Part 1 here, and Part 2 here.  Have a great weekend and I hope to see all of you next week!

In Focus Friday w/ My Mind's Lens: August 2013

Kaeley is here today for the August edition of In Focus Friday.  Lucky for me, she takes requests.  My goal for this holiday weekend is to soak up as much information as I can from my Shoot Fly Shoot classes for my trip to Florida.....I don't want my trip to the ocean to be a big fat picture fail!  If I am being honest, this post has kind of scared me.  Kaeley's pictures are beautiful, but I am seriously doubting my ability to capture similar images.....aperture, ISO, shutter speed - oh, my!  May the DSLR force be with me...and enjoy the eye candy below!

Photobucket

Last month, I asked Julie if there was anything in particular that she would like me to share with you for In Focus Friday - such as a specific subject, all black & white, or tips.  She chose #3.  A little bird told me that she is getting ready to visit Florida *which makes me very jealous...as our summer here in the NW seems to be getting ready to die down already* and she's planning on bringing her "big girl camera", as she likes to call it.

While I would never claim to be an expert, I'd like to share a few tips on how to take pictures of the ocean, as well as capture beautiful sunsets.

Before you start taking pictures of the waves crashing onto the sand, or the sun reflecting off the wet beach, you should try to picture in your mind what you want the image to look like.  If you are wanting to capture the movement of the water, and the flow of the waves coming and going, you will want to use a slower shutter speed.  This will cause the shutter to stay open longer, capturing a longer period of time and resulting in that soft, blurred look.  However, if you want to freeze the motion and be able to see the details and individual water droplets, you will need to have a very fast shutter speed.

I don't have a perfect example of this, but below are two photos of a waterfall.  The shutter speed for the image on the left is 1/250 of a second, while the one on the right is much slower, 1/25 of a second.  The slower shutter speed captures a greater period of time, which allows the water to "flow".

If you are on full manual mode, you will need to adjust your aperture and ISO as well in order to get enough light to properly expose the photo.  Another option would be to use the shutter priority mode - this will allow you to choose your shutter speed, and your camera will adjust the aperture and ISO automatically.

You may also want to use a polarizing filter when taking photos of the water - it will help bring out the blues.  I got mine from Best Buy for less than $20.

One last thing about taking pictures of the ocean, or any body of water really: be mindful of the sky.  The following images were captured on the same day, at the same beach.  In the morning, the sky was gray and overcast, which was reflected in the water, giving the ocean a dark, murky appearance.  Later in the day, the clouds burned off and the pretty blue sky gave the water that glorious blue color.

Moving on to one of my favorite aspects of summer: the {beautiful} sunsets.  To be honest, I haven't captured too many of them in my own photos.  The colors and luminescence of the setting sun bring me a sense of awe and peace, but I rarely have my camera around to harness that feeling.  But, I recently had an opportunity to change that.

When photographing sunsets.....

1. Do not look directly at the sun!  You have heard this before, but just be careful and protect your eyes.

2. Set your aperture to a high value.  This one is weird for me.  When I take portraits, I tend to set my aperture at f/4 or f/5, utilizing a shallow depth of field and creating a blurred background, allowing the subject of the photo to really stand out.  By increasing the aperture, though, you capture more detail in the full image.  You will end up with a clearer photo.  Just as I told you that you'd have to adjust the aperture and ISO for your chosen shutter speed, you will need to adjust the ISO and shutter speed for your chosen aperture.  Your camera should also have an aperture priority mode that will do this automatically.

These were all taken using f/16 - which is a pretty small opening in the lens.  If you turn it up even further, say to f/22, you can get a really dramatic looking sun, and capture that "starburst" appearance.

3. Play around with your shutter speed.  When doing this, you will need to be in full manual mode.  Leave your aperture at one spot (try f/16), and move your shutter speed from faster to slower and watch the difference in the lighting of your images.  I forgot to mention before, but when using slower shutter speeds, you should try to use a tripod to help stabilize the camera body and prevent unwanted "camera shake" or fuzzy images.  If you don't have a tripod, try setting the camera on a table or other stable surface.

Here are some examples of how changes in shutter speed can change your photo:

Personally, I really like the dramatic contrasting look of the photos with shutter speeds around 1/125 and 1/250.  But it really is about getting the picture that YOU like best.

4. Wait for the sun to actually go down, and wait around a little after that.  As beautiful as the sunset itself is, the sky is often even more colorful once the sun goes down.  We didn't wait as long as we should have, but here is a little of what we got:

5. Try a silhouette.  This may sound challenging, but it really isn't.  First, find a subject in the foreground - a bridge, dock, rocks, another person.  Next, set your exposure by focusing on the sky.  Refocus on your subject and take your photo.  This is going to make it so the sky is illuminated, but the foreground will be underexposed, resulting in the silhouette.

{Please note, with the exception of the black & white conversion, none of these photos have been digitally enhanced}

I'm not doing very well at minimizing the "photo dumping" - but I can't help it.  So you get it all....actually this isn't even half of the images that I sorted through, so consider yourselves lucky!

I hope Kaeley's post was helpful and informative to any fellow budding photography junkies out there.  I personally cannot wait to get out and give my newly acquired knowledge the old college try.My skill level on the manual setting has nowhere to go but up!  Have a wonderful weekend!

In Focus Friday w/ My Minds Lens: July 2013

Kaeley is here today for her monthly installment of In Focus Friday.  She is sharing some of the beautiful places that she has been as well as the "short" list of amazing places she hopes to visit in the future!

Photobucket

If I had my way, I would quit my job and spend the next two years traveling the world.  There are so many beautiful places that I would like to visit and photograph.  The short list?  Greece, Italy, Ireland, Australia, Bali, Brazil, Peru, Iceland, Turkey and Costa Rica.  Yes - that's the short list.  However, I have been fortunate to have traveled to several places that I consider beautiful.

1. Ocho Rios {Jamaica}

2. The Forbidden City {China}

3. Crater Lake {Oregon}

4. Po Lin Monastery {Hong Kong}

5. Redwood National Park {California}

SADLY, the Forbidden City and Hong Kong pictures are not mine . . . mine are locked up on my old hard drive and I have no way to access them right now.  But they really are beautiful places, and hold a lot of history.

Next month, I will be sharing some technical tips - so be sure to check back!

I special requested those technical tips, so I can't wait!!!!  I am working on a post about my fabulous experience with Persnickety Prints...so be looking for that in the next day or so.  Have a wonderful weekend!

In Focus Friday w/ My Mind's Lens: June 2013

Thank goodness that today is time for In Focus Friday....otherwise, it could very well be a post-less week.  Last week five - this week nada (yep, I am a hot mess).  I actually have stuff to say, just haven't had the time to put it into words.  Anyway, today Kaeley from My Mind's Lens is going to share some images that inspire her as well of some of her own favorites.  I can relate - I haven't even come close to figuring out my new (to me) toy, but I would kill to capture a sunset like the one below - heck, I would be satisfied just to see it in person!

Photobucket

I cannot believe it is already the end of the month again!  I sure hope the rest of the summer doesn't go by so quickly...I need to be able to enjoy it a little more!

Inspiration.  Not only is "INSPIRE" my one little word for the year, but I think any photographer looks for inspiration.  It's what makes them great.  They may search in nature, in the faces of people they pass on the street, or sometimes it may come to them without even looking.  Unfortunately, the age of Pinterest had not yet come when I was planning my wedding *Or maybe that is a good thing?!*  But now that it is here, I often look there for inspiration in many things - including recipes, motivation to get in shape, and even photography.

It isn't that I "copy" other people's work - but I look for ideas . . . different poses or environments to work with.  Here are some samples of my latest Pinterest inspirations:

COUPLES:

To wrap up, here are a few of my favorite photos from my June sessions.  Maybe they will inspire one of you...

Tonight, I am off to pick up my most favorite guy from Allaso Ranch in East Texas...

Looks like he is having fun!!!
and then tomorrow I am going to an all day crop at this great new scrapbook store that we found a couple of weeks ago.  Hopefully, I will have a good amount of Project Life style pages to share come next week - my fingers are crossed.  If I get scrapper's block - I might just lose my mind!  Have a wonderful weekend and I will be seeing you next week - PROMISE!
